Join Kent State men's basketball coach Rob Senderoff and fellow Northeast Ohio Division I head coaches Keith Dambrot (Akron), Jerry Slocum (Youngstown State) and Gary Waters (Cleveland State) at the 2nd annual Northeast Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer® Tip-off Reception on Thursday, October 3.
The coaches are teaming with the American Cancer Society to raise much-needed funds for cancer programs and services and discuss the upcoming basketball season at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a VIP meet and greet with the coaches and special guest Jim Tressel. For tickets and information, visit www.cvcnortheastohio.org or contact Kristy Kalnitzky at 888.227.6446 ext. 1220 or Kristy.Kalnitzky@cancer.org
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
"Obviously, Coaches vs. Cancer is a great organization and this is an event where all of the money that is raised goes towards cancer research," Senderoff said. "There isn't a person alive who hasn't in some way shape or form been affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly."
Kent State will serve as a sub-host for the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic from Nov. 21-23. The Golden Flashes will host Western Carolina, South Carolina Upstate and Niagara as part of the event, with doubleheaders being played at the M.A.C. Center each night.
The men's basketball program is selling blue and gold wristbands to help raise additional money for Coaches vs. Cancer. Wristbands are currently available in the basketball office at the M.A.C. Center and will be sold at home games during the upcoming season. Fans can purchase one band for $3 or two for $5.
Through the efforts of coaches across the country, Coaches vs. Cancer (coachesvscancer.org) has raised more than $87 million since 1993 to help the American Cancer Society save lives by helping people stay well, helping them get well, by finding cures and fighting back against cancer. The initiative combines the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of athletic coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness, fundraising, and advocacy programs.
About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end cancer for good. As a global grassroots force of three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping you stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, helping you get well by being there for you during and after a diagnosis, by finding cures through groundbreaking discovery and fighting back through public policy. As the nation's largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.8 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, an estimated 13.7 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
