Kent State defeated Lock Haven 22-18 on a 1-2 Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Duals inside Bowen Field House. Sophomore Mimmo Lytle, who went 3-0 on the day, secured the win over Lock Haven with a 5-2 victory over Brad Emerick.  Senior Caleb Marsh also went 3-0.
The Flashes day got off to a slow start with a 32-7 setback against Michigan State, before taking 6-of-10 matches from the Bald Eagles. Â The dual portion of the day ended with a 20-15 loss to Chattanooga.
Meanwhile, on the other side of Bowen Field House, nine Golden Flashes placed in the top eight spots at the Eastern Michigan Open, led by a 141-pound championship from Tyler Small. Fourteen teams competed in the open tournament as Small went 5-0 with four consecutive shutouts.
In each of the first four matches against Michigan State, Kent State either had a third period lead or a tie score, but all four went in the Spartans' favor.  Junior Mack McGuire led 6-3 after two periods, before falling 8-6 to Javier Gasca and junior Kyle Bauer was up 2-0, before being pinned at the end of the third by Garth Yenter.   The Spartans went on to win the first six matches, before Marsh had a big third period in a 12-0 major decision. Lytle got the Flashes second win over Michigan State with a 7-3 decision.
"Mimmo's definitely getting better," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "He's stronger, he's wrestling with more confidence and better mat presence."
Junior Del Vinas and McGuire each won close bouts to give the Flashes a 6-0 lead over Lock Haven. McGuire's victory came on a takedown in overtime. Two matches later, Mike DePalma extended the lead to 12-3 with a third period pin of Dan Neff, after trailing 3-2 in the third.
A Lock Haven pin at 197 closed the gap to 19-18, forcing a winner-take-all heavyweight bout. After two periods, Lytle and Emerick were tied 2-2. A quick escape and takedown by Lytle in the third gave the Flashes their first win of the season.
"Our biggest win of that dual, came from Cory Campbell," Andrassy said. "That was a Top 25 guy who won the (Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational) last week. Cory came out and got a five-pointer right away and it forced their guy to change his style."
Chattanooga took 6-of-10 matches from Kent State, including each of the first three. Senior Andrew Candiello knotted the dual up 9-9, pinning Austin Sams with just 13 seconds left in the match. However, the Mocs went to win three of the next four matches, including a 12-10, back-and-forth battle at 197.
Juniors Ian Miller and Cole Baxter were both out of the lineup with injuries. Freshman 125-pounder Anthony Tutolo was also held out of action.
"For having multiple guys out of the lineup, I'm glad we performed as well as we did," Andrassy said. "I'm excited to see where we'll be at as a team by Missouri (Dec. 19)."
In the open tournament, Small won each of his last three matches decisively with scores of 8-0, 6-0 and 6-0. The Flashes also had a strong showing the 184-pound bracket from redshirt freshman Charlie Keenan and true freshman Kyle Conel. Keenan placed fourth with three bonus-point victories.  Conel went 5-1 with two pins in a fifth place finish.
"Tyler looked really good," Andrassy said. "He's 14-1 now and he's been really hard to score on. And a number of our younger guys are getting better. And you could really see it in this tournament."
