Two Convincing Wins Make Up for Flashes' Loss at No. 5 Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo.- Kent State took 2-of-3 dual meets Friday at Mizzou Arena, as a 26-14 loss to No. 5 Missouri was followed by a 36-6 victory over SIU Edwardsville and a 31-6 win over South Dakota State. Mack McGuire, Ian Miller, Tyler Buckwalter and Mimmo Lytle all went 3-0 for the Golden Flashes (4-4, 1-1 MAC).
"We wrestled really well in our second and third dual and Missouri is the real deal," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "Everyone got at least one win today."
Freshman Drew Dickson's first career dual win jumpstarted the first of Kent State's two convincing victories. Dickson's tech fall over Kenny Baldridge helped the Flashes win 9-of-10 matches against SIU Edwardsville.
McGuire got the rally started against South Dakota State with an 8-3 win over Brance Sams, as the Flashes captured eight of the last nine matches against the Jackrabbits. In his 2-0 win over Missouri's Matt Manley, McGuire rode out Manley for the entire second period and earned an escape in the third.
The pleasant surprise of the day came from Buckwalter, who entered Friday 0-5 in dual meets, before going 3-0 with a pair of pins. In a 9-7 win over Missouri's Cody Johnston, Buckwalter had a two-point turn in the second period and a key reversal at the edge of the mat in the third.
"He had a really good day," Andrassy said. "He's starting to feel better. He had surgery in the offseason and got off to a slow this year, but he's starting to come around. Hopefully he'll come back even stronger for the Scuffle."
Miller's 3-0 day featured one major decision as opponents tended to stay in a defensive mode. Miller needed overtime to top Missouri's Joey Lavalee 3-1 with a shrug-by takedown.
"Ian's defense is better than it's ever been," Andrassy said. "When guys aren't coming at him, he's got to be creative with how he wins matches. But it's going to make him a better wrestler moving forward."
Senior Tyler Small made his return to the starting lineup, going 2-1 with his only loss coming against No. 8 Lavion Mays, 5-2. Small was not scored upon in his two victories.
Juniors Mike DePalma and Cory Campbell also went 2-1. Campbell had a pair of takedowns against Top 10 opponent Willie Miklus.
"All of our guys our getting better, Andrassy said. "It's just coming along a little slow. We just need to keep getting better."
The Golden Flashes return to action Jan. 1 & 2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga.
