BUFFALO, N.Y.- Pins from Mike DePalma, Ian Miller and Cole Baxter gave Kent State a 30-10 victory over Buffalo to open Mid-American Conference dual meet competition Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Golden Flashes (2-3, 1-0 MAC) took 7-of-10 matches, including each of the last four.
The Bulls (4-4, 0-1 MAC) led 7-3 after three matches, before Mike DePalma gave the Flashes a lead (9-7) for good with a second period pin at 149. DePalma cradled up Justin Cooksey and rolled him to his back for the first of three Kent State falls.
Miller followed suit with a third period pin of Wally Maziarz. In the blink of an eye, Miller countered a Maziarz shot with an underhook that flung Maziarz directly to his back.
"Those are really what got our team going tonight," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said in his interview with ESPN3. "We've come to expect that out of Ian. And Mike really put himself in a great position to get a fall."
Redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn moved up a weight to 174, earning his first career dual victory, 6-0 over Austin Weigel. Spohn had takedowns in the first and third periods and rode out Weigel in the second.
"Spohn's a kid that goes real hard," Andrassy said. "He works so hard. He's gotten so much better. He's one of those guys that in two or three years, he's going to be really, really good."
Junior Cory Campbell was tied 3-3 with Tony Locke after a period, before securing an 8-6 victory at 184.
Junior Cole Baxter gave the Flashes their third pin of the night. Despite surrendering the opening takedown in the first, Baxter took command of his match in the second. Baxter quickly scored a takedown, threw legs in from the top and put Joe Ariola on his back with a power half.
Sophomore Mimmo Lytle closed out the dual with a 7-3 victory over Mike Silvus, with a takedown in each period.
The Flashes' first win came from junior Mack McGuire at 133. McGuire jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first with a takedown and a two-point turn. With his lead trimmed to 4-2 in the third, McGuire escaped and converted another takedown to seal the win.
A stalling point proved costly in Kyle Bauer's 2-1 loss to Jason Estevez at 141.
With finals week approaching, Kent State will take 13 days off from competition. The Flashes return to the mat Friday, Dec. 19 in Columbia, Missouri for three dual meets. The day starts with a conference dual against Missouri followed by non-conference matchups with SIU-Edwardsville and South Dakota State.
