Kent State Adds Guard Deon Edwin for 2014-15 Season

KENT, Ohio — Kent State men's basketball Head Coach Rob Senderoff has announced the signing of Deon Edwin to a National Letter of Intent. A 6'3", 205-pound guard, Edwin hails from the Virgin Islands and joins the program after spending this past season playing for Laramie County Community College in Wyoming.

"We are really excited to add Deon Edwin to our program and Kent State family," Senderoff said. "Deon had a great year at Laramie County. He played for a very good head coach, Jason Ficca, who did a great job helping him develop."

A First Team All-Region IX selection, Edwin scored a Laramie County single-season record 675 points in his lone year at the school. He averaged 21.8 points per game, which ranked 10th in the country, while also leading the Golden Eagles in rebounding at 7.4 rebounds per game and handing out 3.0 assists per game.

"The thing that impressed me most about Deon is his physical style of play," said Senderoff. "At 6'3" and 205 pounds, he will be strongest and most physical perimeter player on our roster. We have four returning perimeter players, so I felt we needed to add somebody with experience to go along with those guys to help us next year. I'm confident that Deon can step in and do that."

The Edwin name may be familiar to Kent State fans, as Deon's older brother, Jason, donned the Golden Flashes uniform during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 campaigns. Jason Edwin averaged 12.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and was named All-Mid-American Conference honorable mention as a senior. A 43-percent shooter from the three-point line over his two seasons in Kent, he helped the Flashes earn back-to-back National Invitation Tournament (NIT) bids. Senderoff was an assistant on the Kent State coaching staff during those years and assistant coaches Eric Haut and DeAndre Haynes were both teammates of Jason's.

"There was an obvious connection with him through Jason, who played here and had two very good seasons for us," Senderoff said. "Coach Steinburg did a great job of recruiting him, and Coach Haynes and Coach Haut did a tremendous job once he got to campus. Coach Haynes actually lived with Jason for one of those years. Deon is a different player and his style of play is different than Jason's, but we anticipate two very good seasons from him."

Edwin, who began his college career at Southern Miss, will have two years eligibility remaining. The Flashes have had tremendous success over the years helping players transition back to the Division I level after transferring to a junior college, most recently 2013 First Team All-MAC forward Chris Evans and 2011 MAC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Porrini.

With the addition of Edwin, Kent State is set to have six first-year players on its roster for the 2014-15 season. Swingman Gary Akbar (San Jacinto College [Tex.]), post Raasean Davis (Paulding County H.S.) and wing Rosel Hurley (Shaker Heights H.S.) signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period and sophomore post Jimmy Hall and senior center Blake Vedder will be eligible to play after sitting out this past season under NCAA transfer rules.
