KENT, Ohio — Junior Emma Johnson threw a shutout for the second time in as many days as Kent State needed just five innings to defeat Mid-American Conference East Division foe Bowling Green, 8-0, Saturday afternoon at the Diamond at Dix.
A day after tossing a no-hitter against Toledo, Johnson (11-7) allowed just two hits in throwing her fourth shutout of the season. She finished with six strikeouts, one walk and two hit batters.
Sophomore Michele Duffy put the Golden Flashes on the board with a two-out single in the bottom of the second inning that scored pinch-runner Chloe Kesterson. After freshman Maddy Grimm was intentionally walked, junior Dani Ramos tripled to give Kent State a 3-0 lead. Junior Ariele Patterson added a home run in the third inning.
Senior Jessacca Gironda got the fourth started with a pinch-hit single and advanced to second two batters later when Grimm was intentionally walked for the third time. Ramos followed with a single to load the bases. Junior Kim Kirkpatrick hit a grounder to the shortstop, who threw home. The Bowling Green catcher dropped the throw, however, to allow Gironda to score. Patterson made it 6-0 with an RBI single up the middle
Kent State's offense wasted little time putting the run-rule into effect in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff single by senior Abbey Ledford and consecutive walks loaded the bases for sophomore Erika Warren, who singled to right field to bring home the final two runs.
Kent State wraps up an 8-game homestand against Bowling Green on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Diamond at Dix.
