NORFOLK, Va.- No. 19 Old Dominion (9-3) pulled away in the final two bouts to top Kent State 25-10 Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center. The Golden Flashes were within striking distance at 16-10, before dropping an overtime bout at 141.
While Kent State fell to 2-2 in Mid-American Conference competition, Mack McGuire, Ian Miller and Mimmo Lytle all improved to 4-0 in MAC duals.
Miller started the afternoon with an impressive display from his feet in a 19-5 major decision over Devin Geoghegan. Miller rattled off seven takedowns, including an inside trip in the third period that sent Geoghegan to his back.
Junior Tyler Buckwalter's streak of 10 straight dual wins came to an end in an 8-1 loss to No. 15 Tristan Warner.
Just over a minute of riding time made the difference in Mike Vollant's 3-2 setback against Austin Coburn at 174. Coburn's win gave the Monarchs the lead (6-4) for good.
Lytle got the Flashes next victory in dramatic fashion. Neither wrestler was able to score a takedown. Following the second pair of tiebreaker periods at top and bottom, Lytle carried a 23-second edge in riding time, giving him a 4-3 victory.
McGuire picked up the Flashes' third win with a 4-3 decision over Micahael Hayes. After a scoreless first period, McGuire escaped to start the second and converted a double leg takedown near the edge of the mat.
Senior Tyler Small surrendered a riding point to Chris Mecate, which forced overtime. Tied 1-1, a Mecate shot ended the match with 20 seconds on the clock in sudden victory.
The Golden Flashes (6-10) return to action Friday, hosting Eastern Michigan in the third annual Beauty & The Beast event at the M.A.C. Center. Kent State's gymnastics team will be taking on Pittsburgh simultaneously.
