YPSILANTI, Mich. – Seniors Mack McGuire, Mike DePalma and Cole Baxter and redshirt freshman Kyle Conel all went 3-0 at the Eastern Michigan Duals, while Kent State went 2-1 with a pair of one-sided victories Saturday at the Convocation Center. The Golden Flashes blew away Bloomsburg 33-3 and also took 9-of-10 matches from Olivet in a 46-6 victory. No. 23 Rider ended the Flashes hopes of a sweep with an 18-14 win.
The most encouraging sign of the day came from Conel, who was competing in his first three college dual meets. A 33-second pin and a 21-6 technical fall made Conel look like a veteran at 197.
"Kyle's very strong and aggressive and it paid off for him, getting a tech fall against a national qualifier." Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. ""I was really impressed. He's done everything we've asked him to do and he looked prepared."
Baxter, last year's 197-pounder, looked more effective at 184. He recorded a third period pin, an 11-1 major decision and a 3-0 shutout.
The most impressive victory of the day belonged to DePalma who knocked off Rider's Bryant Clagon, who finished fifth at last year's NCAA Championships and was No. 4 according to InterMat. DePalma's 4-3 decision over Clagon at 149 followed a 16-1 tech fall against Olivet's Matthew Lopez.
"It was a good win for Mike," Andrassy said. "He's in great shape right now and it paid off. Mike got taken down once but got a reversal that really made the difference."
Redshirt freshman Casey Sparkman made his debut in college dual meets, going 2-1 with a major decision at 157. Starting 157-pounder Ian Miller did not see action Saturday and his absence may have made the difference against Rider.
Seniors Tyler Buckwalter, Del Vinas and Mike Vollant and sophomore Chance Driscoll all went 2-1 on the day. Vollant and Buckwalter each had pins against Olivet.
As the EMU Duals took place a number of other Flashes were competing in the Eastern Michigan Open.
"We need to figure out a couple weight classes still, but a lot of guys did a great job for their first weekend," Andrassy said.
Sophomore Drew Dickson went 5-1 at 125 for a fifth place finish. Anthony Tutolo placed second, going 4-1 at 133. Charlie Keenan won three straight in wrestle backs on his way to an eighth place and a four-win day.
Kent State (2-1) returns to action Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Ohio Duals in Geneva.
