MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Junior Ian Miller and sophomore Mimmo Lytle improved to 6-0 in Mid-American Conference duals, but Kent State suffered a 19-13 loss to Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Arena. An overtime win at 165 made the difference for the Chippewas, who improved to 5-1 in MAC competition.
Central Michigan won the first four bouts, jumping out to a 13-0 lead, before Miller put the Golden Flashes on the board with a 5-2 victory over Cody LeCount.
Jordan Wohlfert's 4-2 win in sudden victory over Tyler Buckwalter put the Flashes' backs to the wall (16-3) and Jordan Ellingwood's victory at 174 gave the Chippewas an insurmountable lead. Caleb Marsh's 7-0 loss was just his second match back, since returning from a rib injury that kept him out for six weeks.
Redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn improved to 2-0 on the weekend and 4-2 in MAC duals with a 15-4 major decision over C.J. Brucki at 184.
Junior Cole Baxter cut into the deficit with a 4-0 blanking of Jackson Lewis and Lytle gave Kent State three straight wins with a 3-2 decision over Adam Robinson.
The Flashes' best opportunity in the early matches came at 133. Junior Mack McGuire led 1-0 after a period, before falling 5-2 against Tyler Kesselring.
Kent State (7-11, 3-3 MAC) returns to action Sunday, Feb. 8, hosting Northern Iowa at 1 p.m.
