CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 12 Illinois was too much for Kent State to handle Sunday during the regional round of the NWCA National Duals at Huff Hall. The Illini took all 10 matches in a 38-0 victory.
Regular starters Mack McGuire (133), Mike DePalma (149) and Cole Baxter (197) were all out of the lineup Sunday and Illinois picked up 14 team points in those three weight classes.
The closest battles came at 149 and 174 where Kyle Bauer and Caleb Marsh each dropped one-point decisions.
Bauer held a 3-2 lead in the third period, before a Kyle Langenderfer takedown made the difference in a 4-3 decision. Marsh dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 10 Zac Brunson, who also needed to score in the third period for the win. Marsh took a 2-1 lead in the third with a reversal, before Brunson converted a reversal of his own.
In a clash of two highly-ranked 157-pounders, No. 2 Isiah Martinez remained undefeated (26-0) with a third period pin of No. 4 Ian Miller. Martinez got a key takedown in the first and an escape in the second, giving him a 3-1 lead to start the third.
Senior Tyler Small put the pressure on No. 11 Steven Rodrigues in the third period, but came up short in a 6-4 loss. Leading 6-2 after two periods, Rodrigues was hit with three stalling calls in the third.
Junior Del Vinas kept his match scoreless after two periods in a 3-0 loss against two-time NCAA champion Jesse Delgado.
Redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn briefly held a 3-2 lead in the first period before dropping a 6-3 decision to No. 22 Lazarus Reyes.
Illinois will compete in the quarterfinals of the NWCA National Duals next weekend at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.Â
Sunday marked the first time Kent State was shut out since 1999.
The Golden Flashes will take a 20-day break from competition, before heading to the University of Missouri for the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships March 7-8.
