CLEVELAND, Ohio — Kent State senior guard Kris Brewer has been named Mid-American Conference Sixth Man of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday (March 10) morning. Brewer received All-MAC honorable mention recognition for the second consecutive season when the all-conference teams were released on Monday.
The fourth Golden Flash to earn the award, Brewer joins a list that includes Kevin Warzynski (2006), Anthony Simpson (2010) and Carlton Guyton (2011).
"This is a well-deserved honor for Kris," said head coach Rob Senderoff. "He showed tremendous selflessness in accepting a role coming off the bench and being a spark for our team. His last week of the regular season is something that will never be forgotten at Kent State and I'm really proud of him for the way he led our team this season."
After starting every nearly every game during his sophomore and junior years, Brewer was asked to come off the bench after the first month of the season and made just 10 starts. He averaged 11.2 points, 2.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game for the Flashes. On February 4, Brewer became the 30th player in program history to score 1,000 points and enters the postseason 23rd on the all-time scoring list with 1,101.
Brewer delivered two big performances in the final week of the regular season that helped the Flashes clinch a share of the MAC regular season title, earning MAC East Division Player of the Week honors in the process. He averaged 20.5 points per game and shooting 8-for-10 from the three-point line in wins over Bowling Green and Akron. Against the Zips, Brewer drove the length of the court for a layup at the buzzer, his fourth game-winner of the season.
Kent State begins play in the 2015 MAC Men's Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland with a quarterfinal game on Thursday night at approximately 9 p.m. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will be broadcasting the game live.
