LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Kent State softball team defeated Saint Francis (Pa.), 6-1, in its final game at the Liberty Classic on Sunday. The Golden Flashes went undefeated over the weekend and outscored their opponents 37-5 over the five games.

For the second day in a row, Kent State (17-6) displayed its power throughout the lineup. Four of the team's seven hits went for extra bases, including two home runs.

"Today's win was a good test for our team," said head coach Karen Linder. "We were able to put all phases of the game together and it was also great to see us score runs in multiple innings."

The Flashes got on the board first on a two-run blast to right center by Maddy Grimm in the top of the third inning.

In the fourth, Holly Speers kept the inning alive by drawing a two-out walk. Janel Hayes then brought Speers home with a double to left center.

Saint Francis' Lindsey Reid hit a leadoff home run in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.

Speers gave the Flashes some breathing room with a two-run homer in the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Michele Duffy with the bases loaded in the seventh allowed Arika Roush to tag up and score the final run of the game.

Emma Johnson (8-3) recorded 11 strikeouts in a complete game effort. Johnson allowed five hits and three walks. She has allowed more than one earned run in just two of 10 starts this season.

"I'm very proud of our team's performance this weekend," added Linder. "The offense really came on and we were able to utilize most of our roster to help go undefeated in the tournament."

Kent State will play a midweek doubleheader at Youngstown State beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before opening Mid-American Conference play at Buffalo next weekend (March 28-29).
