EVANSTON, Illinois- Kent State soccer (15-3-2) dropped its NCAA Tournament First Round match to No. 21 Northwestern (15-2-4) 3-0 Saturday afternoon, bringing the Golden Flashes record-setting season to an end.
The Golden Flashes came out with great pace and nearly took an early lead but an offsides call negated a would-be Hayden Pascoe goal.
The Wildcats would get on the board in the 18th minute as Marisa Viggiano played a corner kick into Kayla Sharples who headed the ball into the back of the net.
Nandi Mehta would add Northwestern's second goal on penalty kick just over two minutes later, following a questionable foul call in the Kent State box.
Just over 15 minutes into the second half, Amanda Reed and Jenna Hellstrom were each able to get shots off from just outside the 18-yard box but Northwestern's keeper, Lauren Clem, was able to come up saves on each shot.Â
With Kent State ramping up their attack late in the game, the Wildcats were able to counter and net their third goal of the match. Marisa Viggiano played the ball through to Rachel Zampa, who crossed the ball back across the field to Kassidy Gorman who scored with one touch.
Shots for the match were tied at 10 apiece, while the Golden Flashes had the advantage in corner kicks 3-2.
This season was one for the record books for the Golden Flashes, as they won a program record 15 matches, went unbeaten in 13 straight matches and won the first MAC Tournament Championship in program history.Â
The 2016 season senior class of Jenna Hellstrom, Abigail LaVigna, Abbie Lawson, Brittany Maisano and Morgan Williams is the winningest class in program history with a total of 48 wins.
