Kent State and Chattanooga won five matches apiece but bonus points made the difference in a 22-19 road victory for the Mocs Sunday afternoon at the Field House. The Golden Flashes trailed 22-5, before winning the final four matches from 133 to 157.
Beginning at 165, Chattanooga won the first three matches, jumping out to a 13-0 lead.
"We're giving up more bonus points than we're getting and that's what's causing us to lose these dual meets." Head Coach Jim Andrassy said.
Junior Stephen Suglio emphatically put the Flashes on the board, sealing a 17-2 tech fall midway through the second period. Suglio tossed Barrett Walthall to his back for a six-point move in the first. A four-point tilt in the first and another in the second gave him the 15-point edge to stop the match.
Sophomore Anthony Tutolo countered a Chris Debien shot for a key first period takedown in a 6-3 victory. With the match tied 3-3 after two periods, Tutolo escaped 30 seconds into the third and secured a takedown in the final seconds.
Drama continued at 141, when junior Chance Driscoll needed overtime to top Roman Boylen 6-4. Driscoll trailed 3-1 in the second, before a quick, reacting reshot resulted in a takedown. Driscoll had near takedowns at the end of regulation and the beginning of sudden victory, but a relentless approach ended with a no-doubt double leg takedown.
"Chance has been our most consistent guy," Andrassy said. "He's a workhorse. He's the first one into practice and the last one out. Now we need nine other guys to do what he's doing seven days a week."
Redshirt freshman Tim Rooney earned his first career dual win, a 6-3 decision over Dylan Potter. Rooney scored takedowns in the first and third periods and took control of the match in the second with a reversal.
Sophomore Casey Sparkman strung together six takedowns and a pair of four-point tilts in a matter of two periods for a 20-5 tech fall over Trey Watson.
The Golden Flashes jump back into Mid-American Conference competition Tuesday afternoon, visiting No. 5 Missouri.
