RADFORD, Va. – Kent State (9-3) overcame a 5-1 deficit to take the second game at Radford (2-13) by a final score of 7-6 on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes scored first with a run in the 2nd. Zarley Zalewski led off with a double and came home later on a Zach Beckner base hit.
The Highlanders were able to take their first lead of the weekend in the bottom of the inning on a full-count walk and two-run homerun. They added to their lead with another run in the 4th and two more in the 5th, due in part to some miscues by the Flashes' defense making three of the five runs unearned.
Down 5-1, Kent State answered right back with a four-run 5th. DalPorto started things off with a single moved his way to third before Luke Burch walked and stole second. With two outs in the inning, Alex Miklos reached on an error that scored DalPorto and put runners on the corners. Zalewski then swatted another double for two RBI and to put the Flashes down by just a run. Dylan Rosa tied the game at five during the next at-bat on a single.
The Golden Flashes took the lead in the next inning when Brad Hamilton doubled and scored later on a sacrifice fly by DalPorto. They made it a 7-5 game in the 7th when Mason Mamarella entered the game and singled up the middle, stole second and scored on an error.
Andy Ravel worked his way around five errors by the defense to go 7.0 innings with only two earned runs, five hits one walk and five strikeouts for the win. He gave way to Zach Willeman. In the bottom of the 9th, Willeman hit and walked a batter and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt to make things interesting. However, a strikeout got the Flashes closer to a victory. The game ended as Radford hit a groundball that was thrown wild, but Zalewski gathered it and threw the second runner out at home to end the game.
Zalewski continued his torrid hitting, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and two walks in the contest. Burch and Rosa also picked up two hits in the win.
Kent State will look to go for its third-straight weekend sweep and its tenth-straight win in the series finale on Sunday.
