PITTSBURGH, Pa. – An early lead was erased by a seven-run inning from Pittsburgh (12-9) as Kent State (17-7) dropped the matchup on the road 13-5.
Half of the runs scored in the game came via the homerun, as it was a day that featured the long ball.
A Panthers' single and double in the 1st gave the home team a quick lead. In the following frame, Dylan Rosa doubled before Conner Simonetti hit a towering shot out to center field to put the Flashes in front 2-1.
However, a seven-run bottom of the 2nd would prove to put Kent State in too much of a deficit to overcome. Pittsburgh managed three walks, two homeruns, one triple, one double and one hit batter to do its damage.
The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the 4th on a two-run homer before the Golden Flashes were able to hit another homerun themselves, a solo shot off the bat of Alex Miklos. Pittsburgh made it a 13-3 game with a run in the 6th and two more in the 7th.
The final runs came from Kent State in the 8th. Reilly Hawkins led off in a pinch hit appearance and made hit way to second before Zarley Zalewski doubled him home. Dom Iero then singled to put runners on the corners, allowing Zalewski to score when Brad Hamilton singled to center.
Joey Murray suffered the loss as he went just 1.2 innings in the start. Aaron Tadian followed to go 3.1 innings before Patrick Dayton filled in 2.1 frames. Tim Faix ended the game on the mound, going 1.1 innings including a 1-2-3 8th.
The Flashes had a dozen hits on the day. Simonetti and Mason Mamarella both finished 2-for-4.
Kent State returns home to Schoonover Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m. to being a three-game conference series with Western Michigan.
