Juniors Milena Fabry and Skyelee Lamano of the Kent State gymnastics team were named Distinguished Scholar Athletes as announced by the Mid-American Conference last week.
Fabry, a native of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, holds an astounding 3.977 grade point average as a biology/ pre-med major. Fabry competed as a specialist on the balance beam in seven meets this season for the Golden Flashes. At the NCAA Iowa City Regionals on April 2, Fabry finished tied for 26th with a score of 9.775.
Lamano, a native of Layton, Utah, holds an impressive 3.778 GPA as a marketing major, garnering the Distinguished Scholar Athlete award for the second year in a row. Lamano was one of two gymnasts to compete on at least three events in every meet this season for the Golden Flashes. At the MAC Championships on March 19th, Lamano tied a career-high of 9.9 on the floor exercise to finish in a tie for 3rd place.
In total, 21 Golden Flashes from the eight winter sports were named Distinguished Scholar Athletes, as the women's track and field team led the way with 11 selections.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete award is given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the winter sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students, junior college and graduate school transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2015-16 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
