NILES, Ohio – In a game of back-and-forth baseball, Kent State (39-12) went ahead early, got down, worked its way back and ultimately suffered a 11-10 extra-innings loss at Youngstown State (14-35) on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes had a comfy 6-0 lead through the first four frames. It started with a two-run second as Dylan Rosa started things with a walk, Conner Simonetti singled and Pete Schuler singled home the first run. Dom Iero then reached on a fielder's choice while an error allowed another run to score.
Another run came home in the 3rd when Mason Mamarella walked, stole second, then scored on a Rosa single to left field. A three-run 4th put Kent State up 6-0. In the inning, Josh Hollander started things with a walk and stolen base. Mamarella repeated the same to put two runners in scoring position before Zarley Zalewski came up with a big two-RBI double. Rosa then followed with a double of his own.
The Penguins broke through for their first run of the day after two walks and a RBI single in the 4th. A seven-run 6th inning allowed Youngstown State to take an 8-6 lead as they got ahead with some help. An error, two singles, walk, hit batter, two wild pitches, another walk, single, walk and a final single accounted for the damage. They added to the lead on a two-run homerun in the 7th.
Kent State was resilient, scoring three in the 8th and one in the 9th to send the game to extra innings. In the 8th frame, Reilly Hawkins singled, Luke Burch walked and Mamarella reached on an error to get the rally going. After Zalewski walked to load the bases, Rosa smacked a two-out, two-RBI base hit to make the deficit just one run. The game-tying run came by way of a Tim DalPorto single, Iero double and a RBI groundout by Sam Hurt.
The tie would stand until the bottom of the 11th as a walk and two base hits handed Youngstown State the win.
Joey Murray was hitless in 3.1 innings as the starter. He did give up one earned run with four walks and five strikeouts. Fellow freshman Connor Wollersheim followed as he went 2.0 innings with two earned runs, three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Eli Martin, Aaron Tadian, Patrick Dayton and Zach Spangler all appeared in relief before Zach Willeman threw the final 2.1 innings in the loss, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out two.
Zalewski and Rosa earned three RBI each as they went 4-for-5 and 3-for-5, respectively, while both also had a double in the game. Hawkins finished 2-for-5. Mamarella led the team with three runs scored.
The Golden Flashes will wrap up the regular season at home against Western Carolina. Game times are set for Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
