AVON, Ohio – Eric Lauer led No. 1 Kent State (42-12) to its first victory of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Tournament as he hurled a complete-game shutout against No. 8 Eastern Michigan (20-35) in a 1-0 contest.
Lauer allowed just four hits in the nine innings while striking out nine Eagles. He used 113 pitches, 79 of them strikes, to drop his season ERA to 0.69.
The sole run of the game came on a single swing of the bat as Conner Simonetti sent a pitch soaring over the wall in right field in the first at-bat of the bottom of the second frame.
Simonetti also had a single to account for two of the Flashes' seven hits in the contest. The only other for extra-bases came on a double by Josh Hollander.
The Golden Flashes will now play the winner of No. 4 Northern Illinois and No. 5 Toledo on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m.
