DAYTON, Ohio- Senior Jenna Hellstrom scored two goals in Kent State's 2-1 win over of the Dayton Flyers on Sunday in the first ever meeting between the two programs. With the win, the Golden Flashes improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Flyers move to 0-3-0.
The Golden Flashes defense stood strong throughout the match in front of goalie Ashleah McDonald who stopped seven of the eight shots on goal from the Flyers.
The Flyers tested McDonald in the first minute of the match as Meghan Blank got in behind the Flashes defense but couldn't get enough power on a ball crossed into the box to get it by McDonald.Â
The Golden Flashes got on the attack in the ninth minute of the game, and forced a Dayton foul outside the 18-yard box. The Flashes played the free kick quickly to Hellstrom in the box where she was taken down garnering a penalty kick. Hellstrom took the shot, putting the ball low into the left side of the net for her second goal of the year, and 25th of her career.
Following Hellstrom's goal, the Flyer's had several good chances to score but the Kent State defense stepped up to challenge.Â
In the 17th minute, Dayton's Alexis Kiehl drove to right side of six-yard box and ripped a shot that was deflected wide by a crashing Paige Culver.Â
McDonald came up with a great save in the 28th minute, as Dayton's Sara Robertson got free into the box but was met by diving McDonald who made the save.
Kent State would carry the 1-0 lead into the second half where McDonald was once again tested early in the period. Dayton's Alexis Kiehl got a cross played into her and headed the ball up off the crossbar forcing McDonald to charge out and grab it just before another Dayton attacker could get to it.Â
Dayton would get on the scoreboard in the 66th minute on a penalty shot stemming from an ill-advised slide tackle just inside the 18-yard box. Alexis Kiehl took the shot, netting her third goal of the season.
The Golden Flashes would answer just two minutes later, as freshman Maddie LaVigna played the ball into the box to a streaking Hellstrom who chipped the ball over the charging Dayton keeper for her second goal of the game. For LaVigna, it was her first career assist and point as a member of the Golden Flashes.  For Hellstrom, it's her 26th career goal and 12th game-winning goal, extending her own Kent State record.  Hellstrom also notched the third multiple-goal game of her career, putting in her in tie with Lauren Covay '03 for sixth all-time.Â
The Flyers would threaten a few more times in the final 20 minutes but the Flashes defense was up to the task and McDonald would make two more saves in the final two minutes to earn her second win of the season and 13th of her career to tie Angela Snow '98 for fifth all-time.
Up next, Kent State will travel to Jacksonville Florida to take on the University of North Florida on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. and then face-off with Jacksonville University on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.Â
