Flashes Drop Pair in Opening Half of Virginia Duals

Kent State dropped its opening two dual meets Friday in the pool portion of the Virginia Duals inside Hampton Coliseum. Lock Haven topped the Golden Flashes 32-10, while No. 5 Virginia Tech ran away with a 41-3 victory.
Junior Chance Driscoll went 2-0 with a major decision at 141 pounds. Driscoll put the Flashes on the board against Lock Haven with a big third period against Lewis Williams on the way to a 12-4 victory. He then topped Virginia Tech's Kevin Norstren 3-2.
Sophomore Casey Sparkman kept the Flashes within striking distance of Lock Haven in a 10-5 win over Jonathan Russ at 157. Two matches later, junior Jairod James piled up 12 points in the first period and hung on for a 15-12 victory over Tyler Wood.
Sophomore heavyweight Devin Nye held a 2-1 lead after one period against No. 13 Thomas Haines. Tied 2-2 after two, Nye chose bottom, but was pinned 42 seconds into the third.
The Flashes will compete in two more duals Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Bronze Bracket at Hampton Coliseum.
