Nye, Spohn and Driscoll Highlight Flashes' Night Against Northern Illinois

Three Golden Flashes earned victories in Kent State's 30-12 setback against Northern Illinois Friday night at the M.A.C. Center. The Huskies jumped out to a 27-3 lead with the help of a forfeit at 133 and a pin at 165.
Junior Jerald Spohn gave the Flashes six team points with a second period pin of Bryce Gorman at 184 pounds. Gorman stood up from the bottom position just as Spohn gradually locked up a cradle and swept Gorman's far foot to put him on his back. Spohn also turned Gorman in the first, racing out to an 8-1 lead.
Junior Chance Driscoll rode out Anthony Rubino for the entire third period in a 3-0 win to put Kent State on the board. Driscoll escaped in the second and earned a stalling point. Driscoll improved to 9-2 in duals.
Sophomore heavyweight Devin Nye flattened Caleb Gossett and spun around for takedowns in the second and third period on the way to a 5-1 victory.
Nye's win came on the heels of a strong effort from junior Stephen Suglio at 197. Suglio dropped a 2-1 decision against No. 11 Shawn Scott. Each wrestler earned escapes, but Suglio's came after Scott built up a minute of riding time in the third period. Suglio threatened takedowns in the first but could not finish one off.
Sophomore Casey Sparkman led Caden McWhirter 4-1 in the first, but McWhirter's four-point turn in the third was enough to pull away in a 10-4 victory.
Kent State continues its homestand Sunday, hosting Northern Iowa at the M.A.C. Center, beginning at 2 p.m.
