Kent State got its 2017-18 season off to a 3-0 start on an unconventional day that started at the M.A.C. Center and ended in Clarion, Pennsylvania. The Golden Flashes were nothing short of dominant in their first two duals Friday afternoon with a 38-3 victory over Lake Erie and a 52-0 blanking of Mercyhurst North East. Clarion High school was the sight of the Flashes toughest challenge, a 23-12 win over Utah Valley.
The Flashes won 19 of 20 matches on its home campus, including five pins and seven tech falls.
"We were constantly looking to score today," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the Flashes' afternoon duals. "Several guys looked better in their second match and hopefully we just keep getting better and more consistent."
Senior 125-pounder Will Bardezbain joined a pair of redshirt freshmen, Nick Monico (149) and Dylan Barreiro (174) in going 2-0 in their first two duals in a Kent State singlet. Five other Flashes went 2-0 on the afternoon: Anthony Tutolo (133), Casey Sparkman (157), Isaac Bast (165), Stephen Suglio (197) and Devin Nye (285).  Â
Suglio worked his tilt on the way to 19-3 and 18-2 tech falls. Tutolo and Sparkman also had a pair of tech falls on the day. Tutolo allowed just two points over two matches, while Sparkman totaled nine takedowns on the afternoon.
Sophomore Tim Rooney (141), senior Chance Driscoll (141) and Shane Mast (184) also earned victories in front of their home crowd.
Tutolo, Monico, Sparkman, Barreiro and Suglio each improved to 3-0 on the day, earning five of the Flashes six victories over Utah Valley. Sparkman tallied his third tech fall of the day, while Suglio's first period pin secured the team victory.
"We wrestled really well tonight, even in the matches we lost" Andrassy said. "That was as good as we've been in the last two years. This is a young and scrappy team and so far, everyone's put themselves in position to win. Tonight it looked like we wanted it more."
A number of Kent State wrestlers will compete unattached at the Clarion Open Sunday. The Flashes return to dual meet action Saturday, Nov. 11 in Troy, New York, taking on Hofstra and Virginia at the Journeymen Duals.
