DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Kent State (7-3) claimed a convincing 25-12 win over Columbia Friday, as the Golden Flashes split a pair of dual meets on day one of the South Beach Duals. No. 4 Missouri handed the Flashes a 44-3 setback to start the day inside the Deerfield Beach Sportsplex.
Seven Flashes had their hands raised against the Lions, beginning with junior Anthony Tutolo at 133. The teams traded forfeits and 125 and 149 as wins by Tutolo and sophomore Tim Rooney gave Kent State a 12-6 edge after four matches.
Columbia cut the lead to 12-9 with a win at 157 and jumped out to a 6-2 second period lead at 165. However, junior Isaac Bast made sure his Flashes would not relinquish their lead. A third period takedown completed Bast's comeback in an 8-7 victory.
"Isaac did a really good job of coming back," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "He gave up a four-pointer, but he kept working and wore the guy down."
Redshirt freshman Dylan Barreiro had a pair of first period takedowns in a 6-4 win over Tyrel White.
Freshman Colin McCracken extended Kent State's team lead to 12 with a 3-2 victory. McCracken trailed 1-0 to start the third period, before recording an escape and the go-ahead takedown.
"Colin kept plugging away on his feet in the third," Andrassy said. "He was in two more close matches today and hopefully this win is one he build off of."
Junior Kyle Conel put Michael Bulkin on his back three times in a 19-7 major decision.
The Flashes' lone victory against Missouri came from Devin Nye, who topped Rodrigo Diaz 4-2 with a second period takedown and riding time.
"A lot of guys hadn't wrestled since Buffalo (Dec. 10) and I think it showed against Missouri," Andrassy said. "I'd like to see our guys be more solid in all positions tomorrow."
Kent State will finish out the South Beach Duals taking on No. 12 Cornell Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. tilt with SIU-Edwardsville.
