RALEIGH, N.C. – Kent State scored a new season-high for the third straight meet to finish second in a tri-meet at North Carolina State on Saturday. The Golden Flashes posted a 196.125 to finish behind No. 16 George Washington (196.725) and ahead of the host Wolfpack (195.550).
"We had a really good overall performance tonight," said head coach Brice Biggin. "Putting up a 196.125 on the road is really big for us. Team scores are starting to go up at this time of the season, so you have to keep up with other teams or you're going to fall behind. With how we performed tonight, we put ourselves in good shape."
Kent State (3-8) won the floor exercise competition with a 49.150 and matched its season-high 48.975 on vault. The Flashes scored a 49.025 on bars and 48.975 on beam.
Individually, junior Rachel Stypinski captured titles on floor and beam. Stypinski scored a career-high 9.975 on floor, which is tied for the second-best score in Kent State history, and earned a 9.925 on beam. Junior Brooke Timko matched her career-high score of 9.875 to tie for first on bars.
The Flashes placed three gymnasts in the top four on floor to win the event. Stypinski executed a nearly-flawless routine, and even received a 10.00 from one of the two judges, for a 9.975. Senior Skyelee Lamano tied for second with a 9.875, which matches her season-high. Senior Jordan Hardison scored a 9.850 to finish in a tie for fourth.
Junior Michaela Romito joined Timko in setting a career-high on bars. Romito tied for fourth with a 9.850.
Hardison led the way on vault with a 9.850 to tie for third.
Kent State returns to Mid-American Conference competition next weekend when it travels to Bowling Green for a 6 p.m. meet on Friday.
