KENT, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics was defeated by No. 25 West Virginia, 195.950-194.875, during Saturday afternoon's Beauty and the Beast meet at the M.A.C. Center.
Kent State (2-5) scored a season-best 48.850 on vault. The Golden Flashes also improved upon their season average on floor (48.975) and beam (48.650).
"We constantly tell our team that they are going to perform in meets the way that they perform in practice," said head coach Brice Biggin. "We need to have a little more intensity in practice in order to become a better team in competition. I think some of our girls are hoping they can do it just in the meet, and it doesn't work that way."
Senior Jordan Hardison matched her career-high, which was set last Sunday at Northern Illinois, by scoring a 9.825 on vault to tie for third place. Junior Brooke Timko tied for fifth with a 9.800 in her first vault competition of the season. Sophomore Kennedy Plude scored a 9.775 to finish in a tie for sixth and match her career-high.
On floor, senior Skyelee Lamano took second with a 9.850, which was the Flashes' best finish of the meet. Junior Rachel Stypinski tied for third right behind her with a 9.825.Senior Jordan Hardison and sophomore Alyssa Quinlan each scored a 9.800 to tie for seventh.
Junior Ali Marrero and sophomore Sarah Lippowitsch both tied for third on beam with a 9.775. It was a career-high for Lippowitsch on the event. Plude scored a 9.750 and finished sixth.
Timko led the way on with a 9.825 on bars, to finish third. Romito was right behind her with a 9.800 to tie for fourth.
"I thought Michaela Romito and Brooke Timko both stepped up and had really good meets," Biggin said. "Michaela has been nursing bad ankle and stepped in on vault for us last weekend. We were really down on our numbers on floor today, and she gave us the leadoff we needed. She also did a nice bar routine. Brooke did a great job on bars. She did a great job on vault. Brooke has been battling a bad shoulder and begging to get back on vault. She did her first twisting vault two days ago and wanted to know immediately if she was going to get a chance to go back in and compete. Those are two examples of kids who have overcome some things and practiced well enough that they made a difference. Those are the type of people that you want to put because it means a lot to them."
Kent State gets back into the Mid-American Conference schedule with a trip to Eastern Michigan on February 10.
