Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational shortened due to weather
DUBLIN, Ohio- The Kent State University men's golf team looks to earn a split Tuesday in the weather-shortened Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The Flashes will resume their second-round match against Stanford on Tuesday morning after ending the day trailing six matches.
One of eight teams competing in the match play tournament, the Flashes lost to Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals on Monday morning, 3-2-1. The freshmen shined today as Johnny Travale and Julien Paltrinieri recorded the lone victories. Sophomore halved his match with Ogletree.
Travale defeated Smith in a close match 2-up. After being all squared through four holes, Georgia Tech's Smith went 2-up on the sixth hole before Travale squared things up on the eighth and took the lead on the 11th hole. With Smith threatening to square up, Travale won the final hole.
Paltrinieri defeated Howe 1-up after leading for nine holes. Howe answered back and evened the score on the 10th hole before Paltrinieri went ahead on the 12th hole and won on the final hole.
Josh Gilkison halved his match with Olgletree after Georgia Tech won the 18th hole to avoid a tiebreaker scenario.
Gisli Sveinbergsson and Chris Doody were defeated 2-up in their matches, and Bjarki Petursson fell 2 and 1 after leading by two holes after 12.
Facing Stanford in the afternoon, Stanford leads all six matches. Matches will resume at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The final round has been canceled due to the threat of thunderstorms. The second-round winners between Georgia Tech-South Carolina and Georgia-Clemson will be declared co-champions.
