Flashes Finish 3-1 at Kent State Duals

Kent State claimed decisive victories over Cowley, Lindsey Wilson and Kent State Tuscarawas on a 3-1 Friday at the Field House. Â Twenty-one Golden Flashes saw action at the Kent State Duals, including a number of varsity debuts in the blue and gold.
The most impressive debut may have belonged to Eastern Michigan transfer Andrew McNally. The sophomore 184-pounder went 3-0 with a pin, a tech fall and a major decision.
"Andrew is very consistent," Assistant Coach Dan Mitcheff said of McNally. "All of our guys can take a lesson from him. He got takedowns in the first 30 seconds of each match and he's tough on top, building up riding time right off the bat. We're really looking forward to his future here."
Junior Shane Mast also went 3-0. Despite weighing in at 184, Mast earned a pair of victories at 197.
Another victory at 197 belonged to returning All-American Kyle Conel. With limited use of one shoulder, the fifth-year senior still managed an impressive 20-4 tech fall by the end of the second period against Lindsey Wilson's Lucas Miozza.
Along with 184 and 197, the Flashes also went unbeaten on the mat at 125. Sophomores Jake Ferri and Tomas Gutierrez each went 2-0 in the opening match.
"They are both going to be wrestling throughout the year," Mitcheff said of the competition at 125. "Right now they are very close and having them push each other throughout the year is going to make them both better. We were happy with their performance today."
The Flashes won 26-of-29 matches in their first three duals, but dropped several close bouts in a 21-14 loss to Ashland.
"We tried a number of guys out, Mitcheff said. "We still wanted to come away with a win against Ashland, but getting guys experience was important today. And you can see that a lot of our guys have potential."
Sophomore Nick Monico moved up a weight class this season to 157 and won his lone match of the night.Â
Redshirt freshmen Jake Hinkson (149) and Spencer Berthold (285) both went 2-0 in their varsity debuts.
Taking a short night's rest, the Flashes will load up the bus early Saturday and head to the Clarion Open.
