Five high school wrestling standouts recently signed national letters of intent to attend Kent State next year. The Golden Flashes inked Chris Langguth (Rootstown, Ohio), Avry Mutschler (Lowell, Mich.), James Limongi (Genoa, Ohio), Jacob Sherman (Columbus, Ohio) and Earl Blake (Frederick, Md.).
"I'm really happy with the group we're bringing in," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "It's one of the larger groups we've had for the early signing period. They all have really good wrestling credentials and they are very strong academically. We're excited to see where they take us in the future."
Sherman and Blake will give the Flashes a boost in the lightweights. Sherman competes at 113 pounds for Olentangy High School and is expected to wrestle at 125 for Kent State. He placed fourth at last season's state tournament, finishing 42-6. Sherman is a two-time state qualifier and won both district and sectional crowns as a junior.
Blake of Linganore High School is a two-time Maryland state champion at 126 pounds and a three-time state finalist. Competing in freestyle, he earned All-America honors at Fargo Nationals. Blake will compete at either 125 or 133 for the Flashes.
Mutschler placed second at 135 pounds in Michigan's 2018 Division 2 state tournament and racked up 40 wins last season. He has placed in the top four at the state tournament in each of his three seasons at Lowell High School. Expected to compete at 149 for the Flashes, Mutschler earned All-American accolades at FloNationals in April.
Limongi won a 160-pound Ohio state title as a sophomore at Genoa High School. Last year, he placed third at the state tournament, seventh at the Ironman Invitational and won the Perrysburg Invitational. Limongi is expected to compete at 165 for Kent State.
Langguth is expected to compete one weight up from Limongi at 174. He was a National High School Coaches Coaches Association All-American as freshman and is a two-time state place winner for Rootstown. Last year, Langguth advanced to the 182-pound semifinals of the state tournament and placed fourth. He reached 50 victories on the season.
Additional members of Kent State's 2019-20 incoming class are expected to be announced after the current season.
The Golden Flashes return to action Sunday, Dec. 2, at the SIUE Invitational.
