A pair of Top 20 opponents and an extra bonus point made for a tough Friday for Kent State in losses to Iowa, Wisconsin and Cal Bakersfield during the Frenzy at the Field House. Two CSU Bakersfield major decisions to Kent State's one made the difference in a 17-16 opening dual, while the No. 18 Badgers and No. 3 Hawkeyes came away with road victories of 37-13 and 45-0 respectively.
"It was a great event," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the crowd of roughly 1,100 people all within close proximity of the mats. "Our hope was that we would win the first one. We knew we were a bit outmatched in the next two."
Sophomore and reigning Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week Andrew McNally (184) earned two more victories. McNally cradled up CSUB's Dom Ducharme twice in a 16-3 major decision. He found himself in a much closer match against Wisconsin's Mason Rinehart, up 8-7 with 30 seconds remaining. As Reinhart leaned forward, McNally slipped in an underhook and tossed Rinehart directly to his back, recording a pin with 22 seconds remaining.
Juniors Tim Rooney (141) and Shane Mast (197) joined McNally with victories against Wisconsin. Rooney tied the dual up 4-4, with a 9-1 major decision over Michael Cullen. Rooney dropped a pair close matches against Top 20 opponents. Iowa's Austin Desanto grabbed a late takedown to top Rooney 8-7.
"Our guys need to be a little more aggressive and be a little more physical like Iowa," Andrassy said.
Returning All-American Kyle Conel (197) improved to 2-0 on the year, while still hampered with a shoulder injury. With limited use of his left arm Conel earned a 9-8 decision over CSU Bakersfield's Mark Penyacsek.
Sophomores Jake Ferri (125), Cory Simpson (141) and Dylan Barreiro (174) also won by decision against the Roadrunners. Barreiro later had a back-and-forth battle with Iowa's Myles Wilson that resulted in an 11-9 setback.
The Flashes will be tested once again this weekend, visiting No. 1 Penn State Sunday at 2 p.m.
