
Flashes Renew Rivalry with Edinboro Tuesday Night

After two tournaments this month, Kent State will compete in its first dual meet of December, taking on Edinboro Tuesday at McComb Fieldhouse. The Golden Flashes (3-5) and Fighting Scots (1-1) are slated to begin at 8:30 p.m.

The Opponent
Matt Hill, who spent 11 seasons on Kent State's coaching staff, took over as Edinboro's head coach this past May. Â Shortly after, former Kent State All-American Mike DePalma joined Hill's staff as an assistant coach.
Last season, Edinboro finished 8-5 in dual meets and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. The Fighting Scots opened their 2018-19 dual competition with a 19-17 victory over The Citadel last month. This past weekend sophomore 149-pounder Christopher Matske placed fourth at the Cleveland State Open, while sophomore heavyweight Jon Spaulding captured fifth.

Last Time Out
Sophomore Andrew McNally won a 184-pound title at the Cleveland State Open this past Saturday, going 4-0 with a pin and a major decision. Redshirt freshman heavyweight Spencer Berthold and sophomore 141-pounder Cory Simpson, each placed sixth after winning four consecutive consolation bracket matches.
Quick Shots
- Junior Tim Rooney won a 133-pound title at the Cougar Clash on Dec. 2.
- Last month, Rooney was named MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, after going 5-1 in a third place finish at the Navy Classic.
- Andrew McNally (184) was named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 7, after winning a Clarion Open title and going 8-0 in his opening weekend.
- Senior Isaac Bast (165) and sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174) also won titles at the Clarion Open on Nov. 3.
- McNally, Bast and Kody Komara (149) all placed fourth at the Navy Classic.
- The NWCA honored Kent State for having the second highest grade point average in the nation last season at 3.497, trailing only Harvard.
- Freshman Tim Wallace has won a pair of open tournament crowns, competing unattached at 184. He's reached the finals three of the four tournaments he's competed in.
- McNally leads the Flashes in wins (18), bonus-point victories (14) and pins (8).
- Bast, the lone active senior on the team, leads the Flashes with 88 career victories.
Series History
Edinboro leads the all-time series with Kent State 7-5. The Flashes won the most recent meeting 18-15 in February of 2016. The last time the teams met in Edinboro, the Scots won 27-12 in January of 2015. The Flashes have only won once (1996) in five tries at McComb Fieldhouse.
