Gymnastics Picks up Road Win at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior Rachel Stypinski tied the school record with a 9.950 on uneven bars for the second meet in a row as Kent State earned its highest road score of the season and defeated Western Michigan, 195.575-194.975, in Mid-American Conference competition on Sunday, February 11.
The Golden Flashes (5-2, 2-1 MAC) won three of the four events and scored better than 49.000 on three events for the first time this season.
Stypinski won her third all-around title this season with a 39.350 and earned three score of 9.900 or better for the second week in a row. The All-American won outright titles on bars (9.950) and beam (9.925), while tying for first on floor (9.900).
Kent State's highest score was a 49.125 on uneven bars, an event which it entered ranked No. 20 in the country, and took three of the top five spots. In addition to Stypinski's event title, senior Ali Marrero tied for third place with a 9.850, and senior Brooke Timko finished in fifth place with a 9.800. Junior Sarah Lippowitsch tied for sixth with a 9.775, while senior Michaela Romito and junior Dara Williams each earned a 9.750 to round out the rotation.
The Flashes matched its season-high from last week with a 49.100 on floor exercise and had four gymnasts post a score of 9.800 or better. Stypinski (9.900) tied for first, while junior Alyssa Quinlan and freshman Abby Fletcher both scored a 9.825 to tie for third place. Sophomore Sarah McCarty tied for seventh place with a 9.800.
Anew season-high of 49.025 was set on balance beam, where junior Kennedy Plude finished runner-up to Stypinski with a season-high 9.875. Marrero tied for fourth place with a 9.800.
Fletcher (9.775) and Williams (9.775) tied for second place to lead the way on vault.
Kent State will travel to Mount Pleasant, Michigan to take on No. 19 Central Michigan on Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m.
