LAFAYETTE, La. – Kent State held its ground Tuesday at Oakburn Country Club for a third place finish among 15 teams at the Louisiana Classics. In their third and final round, the Golden Flashes shot even par for a tournament total of 851 (13-under).
"Overall it was a good tournament with three solid rounds," Head Coach Herb Page said. "We just didn't make enough putts today. We won this tournament last year so our expectations were high, but the field was very good. There's nothing wrong with 13-under par."
Individually, senior Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) finished in a tie for third place at 6-under, after shooting a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Texas A&M's Dan Erickson claimed medalist honors at 10-under.
"Ian had a great tournament, he just didn't have his A-game today," Page said.
The top performances of the day for Kent State belonged to junior Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) and freshman Will Kurtz (Hudson, Ohio), who both shot a 1-under 71. Sveinbergsson and Kurtz both tallied four birdies on the day. Sveinbergsson finished tied for 21st overall at 1-under, while Kurtz tied for 34th at 2-over.
"It was nice to see Will come up with that kind of round today," Page said of the rookie proving his ability to be consistent.
Senior Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) also birdied four holes on Tuesday for an even 72. Johnson's 3-under par for the tournament gave him a 12th place finish.
"Chase had a lot of birdies this tournament," Page said. "He just made a lot of unforced errors or he would have been right near the top."
Junior Bjarki Petursson (Borgarnes, Iceland) tied for 46th place after a final round of 77.
The Flashes led the pack on par threes for the tournament with a 3.0 average.
"To get four deuces on the ninth hole yesterday (Round 1) was outstanding," Page said of the par three holes. "Over the years, that hole had our number."
No. 3 Texas A&M earned the team crown at 29-under.
"Texas A&M really got us on the par fives and we're usually really good on the par fives," Page said. "But they're third in the nation for a reason."
Kent State returns to action March 10-11 at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach.
