YPSILANTI, Mich. – Kent State juniors Anthony Tutolo, Casey Sparkman and Kyle Conel all earned victories Sunday at Eastern Michigan's Convocation Center, but the Eagles (7-6, 3-3) celebrated their senior day with a 32-9 win. The Golden Flashes (11-8, 1-3) endured close losses at 125, 165 and 174 along with a tide-turning move that quickly decided the fate of the heavyweight bout.
"Everything fell their way." Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of Eastern Michigan. "The final score really doesn't come close to showing how hard we fought."
The opening 125-pound match proved to be indicative of how the rest of the dual played out. Freshman Jake Ferri held a one-point lead with a minute left in the third period, but was taken down in a 9-8 setback.
Tutolo responded with a 2-1 decision over 2017 NCAA qualifier Noah Gonser.
"Anthony is really good in close matches," Andrassy said. "We need other guys on the team to learn how to win one-point matches the way he does."
Sparkman earned an 8-3 victory over James Wolfe to keep the Flashes within striking distance after five matches.
Junior Isaac Bast (165) found himself in a 4-4 tie during his third period, but Zach Carson score the pivotal takedown for a 6-5 win.
The third period tie theme continued at 174 as Dylan Barreiro and Andrew McNally were locked up at 6-6. An aggressive takedown attempt by Barreiro resulted in McNally putting Barreiro on his back for a pin.
"Dylan came in with a good game plan, but he needed to back down just a bit in the third," Andrassy said.
A similar instance occurred at heavyweight according to Andrassy, when Stephen Suglio shot in on Gage Hutchison in the first period.
"Stephen got in deep on a nice double, but he didn't drop his hips and got rolled to his back on the momentum of it," Andrassy said.
Freshman Colin McCracken (184) also dropped a close bout, 4-1. McCracken trailed by just one point to start the third.
The Golden Flashes will host two MAC duals over three days next weekend beginning with a Friday night (Feb. 9) tilt against Old Dominion.
