Flashes drop series opener to Winthrop on right-hander's two-hit gem
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sophomore right-hander Zach Peek carried a no-hitter into the seventh and struck out 12 Golden Flashes as Winthrop snapped Kent State's three game winning streak with a 8-2 rout on Friday in the opener of a three-game weekend series.
Of Peek's 12 strikeouts, nine were of the swinging variety and a KSU offense which had produced 34 runs on 42 hits last weekend was shut down. Kent State scored a lone run in the seventh and continued to dominate the ninth inning with a second tally after Peek left and Dalton Whitaker took over. KSU has now scored 20 runs in the ninth inning this season.
KSU avoided the shutout (and no-hitter) when Reilly Hawkins tripled to start the seventh. He crossed the plate when Mason Mamarella grounded out. The Golden Flashes were able to continue their stellar defensive play without a single error.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Golden Flashes will continue the series at Winthrop on Saturday. First pitch comes at 3 p.m.
