Double Dose of Drama for Flashes in Friday Sweep

DURHAM, N.C. – In a drama-filled Friday afternoon, Kent State (9-4) defeated Yale (0-5) and Lehigh (1-5) while scoring the game-winning run in the seventh inning of both games. The Flashes scored two in the top of the seventh against Lehigh and Holly Speers clubbed a walk off double to beat Yale. Maria Cegledy paved the way for the offense hitting two triples and scoring two runs against Lehigh, and Holly Speers red-hot hitting continued as she extended her hitting streak to 12 games.
Game 1: Kent State 8, Lehigh 6
Cegledy shot her second triple of the season to the right-center field gap in the second inning which brought home Carlee Selle to fire the opening salvo. Kaitlyn Miller continued to swing the bat well and drove in Cegledy to put the Flashes up, 2-0, with an RBI single to right.
Kent State loaded the bases in the third on hits by Speers and Luther and a walk by Bailey Brownfield. Jen Cader answered with a 2 RBI single up the middle to give Kent State a four-run advantage.
The Mountain Hawks climbed back in the game in the bottom of the third loading the bases up and then singling and grounding out to cut the Kent State lead in half, 4-2.
Cegledy hit her second triple of the game to right to leadoff the fourth inning and scored later in the inning on an error.
Lehigh hit a single to left in the bottom of the fourth inning to trail, 5-3.
Sydney Anderson scored on a wild pitch for Kent State in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lehigh came through in a big way to tie the game at six with a sacrifice fly and a two RBI double.
Kent State scored the game deciding run in the top of the seventh, as Allie Luther doubled to center to score pinch runner Vanessa Vodan. Carlee Selle added one more insurance run with a single up the middle that scored Luther.
Two more Mountain Hawks reached base in the bottom of the seventh, but Madi Huck danced around danger and closed out the game.
Huck (6-0) had to deal with trouble on the bases all day and gave up 11 hits, six earned runs, three walks while striking out three. Lehigh reliever Parker Boyd (0-3) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs in the top of the seventh.
Maria Cegledy had a career-day at the plate and went 2-for-3 with two triples and two runs scored.
Both Allie Luther and Carlee Selle led the team with two RBIs each and were both 2-for-4 with one double.
The bottom three spots of the lineup in Selle, Cegledy and Kaitlyn Miller combined to go 6-for-10 with two RBIs.
Game 2: Kent State 3, Yale 2
The Bulldogs scored in the top of the first inning and struck for their only two runs of the game, scoring on a fielder's choice and a bases-loaded walk.
In the third frame Kent State got on the scoreboard with a Speers double that drove in Miller to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Pinch hitter Sydney Anderson came off the bench and singled up the middle to leadoff the fifth inning. After a sacrifice and a groundout with Anderson on third, Selle hit a ball to the Bulldogs' shortstop that was misplayed and allowed KSU to tie the game at two.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kennadie Goth singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a groundout. Speers cracked a walk off double to left center to score Goth and seal the victory.
Emily Doppin started the game for Kent State and received a no decision, throwing 3.1 frames allowing four hits, two earned runs, with four walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Brenna Brownfield (2-2) threw the final 3.2 inning to earn the victory. She allowed just two hits and struck out three.
Speers was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.
From the leadoff spot Goth was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
