KSU drops hammer on Winthrop, 9-1 to even weekend series
ROCK HILL, S.C. – A day after flirting with history for the wrong reasons, the Kent State offense sprung back to life, and, with some help from five Winthrop errors, evened this inter-league series at a win apiece with a commanding 9-1 rout on Saturday afternoon at Winthrop Ballpark.
Striking for four first-inning runs thanks to one hit and three Eagles' errors, the KSU bats supplied starter Joey Murray with all the support he'd need. The Golden Flashes added runs in the seventh and eighth, further staking claim to owning the late innings offensively. Murray picked up his first win of 2018 with six dominant innings. He struck out eight.
Nick Kanavas and Kian O'Brien combined for five runs batted in as the KSU hitters banged out nine hits. Mason Mamarella and Tim DalPorto also added RBI hits for the victorious Flashes. KSU also added on to its larceny total for the season with four more stolen bases.
Kent State played errorless baseball.
