KENT, Ohio – Bailey Brownfield belted a three-run homer in the third inning to tie the game at three, but Kent State (17-13, 3-3 MAC) could not complete the comeback, and fell to Toledo (21-13, 5-1 MAC) 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Diamond at Dix. The Flashes recorded eight hits but could only muster three runs and left eight on base. The Rockets, who have the lowest team ERA in the Mid-American Conference, held Kent State to three runs for the second straight game.
"We missed some opportunities that cost us today," said Kent State head coach Eric Oakley. "We have to do a better job of capitalizing with runners in scoring position."
Kennadie Goth was a force at the top of the lineup going 3-for-4 with three singles and run scored and picked up nine hits on the weekend.
How It Happened
Toledo struck first scoring a single tally in the second. Megan Choate drove in Bekah Yenrick from first on a double to the wall. The Rockets only had two hits in the inning as Madi Huck struck out the side. Katie Cozy clubbed a two-run homer in the third to give Toledo a 3-0 lead.
Goth singled and Holly Speers walked two put two runners on with two outs in the third for Brownfield. She delivered with her first homer of the season, sending a missile over the right centerfield fence to tie the game, 3-3.
Two walks setup a run scoring fourth for Toledo. After back-to-back free passes with one out and a wild pitch, Kaitlyn Bergman hit a sacrifice fly to give the Rockets the lead without netting a hit in the frame. Bailey Curry belted a two-run homer for Toledo in the top of the seventh to give the Rockets a big three-run cushion to secure the 6-3 win.
The Golden Flashes had a runner on base in every inning except the seventh.
Madi Huck (9-4) was tagged with the loss and went all seven frames. She allowed 10 hits, six earned runs with four walks and struck out six. Kailey Minarchick (11-4) got the win in relief of Heather Webb. She dealt 3.2 innings allowed four hits while striking out two.
