Kent State Shuts Down Bowling Green for Fourth Straight Win

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Kent State (24-19, 10-8 MAC) defeated Bowling Green (25-21, 7-10 MAC) 7-0 at Meserve Field behind the sensational pitching of Madi Huck. The sophomore hurler allowed only three hits and did not allow a Falcon runner to advance past second base in her second complete have shutout in as many start. USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Finalist Holly Speers launched a two-run bomb to centerfield and walked three times. The Golden Flashes have won their past four games and have outscored the opposition, 40-3.
"It's moving weekend in the MAC so to speak, so getting a win to start the series is big. We had good production throughout the lineup, got a great start from Madi Huck and our defense was stellar," said Kent State head coach Eric Oakley. "Kennadie Goth and Kaitlyn Miller each had two hit days and Holly and Brenna Brownfield had two big homers. Birthday Brenna got us started Holly gave us a good cushion. Bowling Green is going to fight and we need to be prepared for their best game tomorrow."
How It Happened
Brenna Brownfield put the Flashes on the board early in the second with a solo-jack to left field, her second of the campaign.
Kent State loaded the bases in the third and after a Speers intentional walk, Bailey Brownfield delivered with an RBI single to left to give KSU a two-run advantage. Emily Dobbin scored on a wild pitch to go up, 3-0.
With two outs in the fourth, Kaitlyn Miller tripled off the right field fence and Kennadie Goth drove her in with in infield chopper.
Kent State loaded the bases with three walks in the fifth and Carlee Selle singled in pinch runner Sydney Anderson to go up, 5-0.
Speers smashed her club-leading 15th home run on the season to dead center on a 3-1 pitch that was left over the plate.
Madi Huck (15-7) tossed all seven frames and walked two with four strikeouts in her sixth shutout of the year. Meredith Miller (13-13) took the loss for Bowling Green and threw 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs.
Speers increased her batting average (.500), on-base percentage (.658) and slugging percentage (1.066) and leads the country in all three categories.
Dobbin and Allie Luther nearly missed home runs and hit two deep fly outs that were caught on the warning track.
Miller was 2-for-3 and has continued to be an effective nine-hole hitter.

Kent State and Bowling Green conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Game two will follow roughly thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
