Three-Run First Propels Flashes in MAC Softball Tournament Opener

AKRON, Ohio – Kent State plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning, which is all of the run support starting pitcher Madi Huck needed in a 3-2 victory over Western Michigan to open the 2018 Mid-American Conference Softball Championship at Firestone Stadium on Wednesday.
The Golden Flashes (29-21) capitalized on wild pitching from Broncos starter Jordan Kurth to push three runs across the plate in their first trip to the plate. After Emily Dobbin was hit by a pitch and a work-around walk to MAC Player of the Year Holly Speers, Bailey Brownfield delivered the only hit of the frame with a single to left field that scored Dobbin. Speers then slid around a tag attempt at the plate on a bouncer hit to the right side by Brenna Brownfield. Consecutive two-out walks drawn by Allie Luther and Carlee Selle brought in the final run.
Huck (18-7) recorded four strikeouts and found a way to work out of jams throughout the day. She surrendered 11 hits but left 10 WMU runners stranded.
Bailey Brownfield singled in each of her first two trips to the plate and Maria Cegledy had the Flashes' other hits.
No. 4 seed Kent State will play the winner of Wednesday's game between No. 1 Ohio and No. 8 Miami on Thursday at 1 p.m.
