HAMPTON, Va. – Kent State sophomore Andrew McNally continued to prove his ability to toss an opponent on his back at any point in a match Saturday at the Virginia Duals. In the Golden Flashes 26-15 setback against Lock Haven, McNally tallied his 12th pin of the season at Hampton Coliseum.
McNally (184) wasted little time taking Austin Bell down to his back for a quick 4-0 lead. Bell responded with an escape and takedown of his own. With a minute remaining in the first period, McNally quickly slipped in an underhook and flung Bell to his back to give Kent State its second straight win of the dual.
The Flashes' first win came from sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174), who scored takedowns in the second and third periods on the way to a 5-4 win. Barreiro trailed Jared Siegrist 2-0 midway through the second period, but finished strong in the final three minutes.
In a rare occurrence, the dual featured three different matches (133, 149, 197) where Kent State's wrestler scored the only takedown of the bout, but lost.
Junior Tim Rooney (133) led Brandon Loperfido 2-0 and appeared to be in control from the top position in the second period. But Loperfido' six-point move (reversal & near fall) was all he would need in a 6-3 decision.
Junior Shane Mast (197) also fell victim to a four-point turn in his 6-4 loss to Parker McClellan.
Redshirt freshman Kody Komara (149) scored an opening takedown in the first, but was unable to break free from the bottom in the second. Riding time made the difference in Kyle Shoop's 3-2 win.
The Flashes will have extra incentive to bounce back from a tough weekend at the Virginia Duals when they return to action Friday, Jan. 18, visiting archrival Ohio in Athens.
