KENT, OHIO- Kent State welcomed in two power-five programs in the #29 Michigan State Spartans and #19 Oklahoma Sooners for the Kent State Tri-Meet on Saturday inside the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes pulled out a pair of wins in each dual, falling to Oklahoma 29-7 and to Michigan State 36-6. In the neutral site match, Michigan State held off the Sooners 21-16.
Against the Sooners, freshman Earl Blake got things rolling for the Golden Flashes. The Maryland native fought back in his match with Tommy Hoskins to force overtime. Blake then earned a takedown in the first extra frame to earn the sudden victory.
Tim Rooney and Kody Komara each lost tough back-and-forth matches with Komara's coming in extra time. At 165, Kade Byland earned a major decision with a decisive 11-3 victory. The Sooners would take a trio of close decisions before a late fall in the heavyweight match closed the dual.
Rooney avenged the close loss against the Sooners by picking up an 8-5 victory over the Spartans' Jake Speiss. Michigan State churned out close decisions up until 174, where Andrew McNally took what might have been the match of the afternoon. McNally rallied from 10-6 down to take an 11-10 lead late in the third period. Layne Malczewski had the riding time bonus, which forced the match into overtime. In the extra frame, McNally earned the take down and picked up an impressive 13-11 comeback victory.
Kent State now sits at 2-3 on the season in dual meets. Next weekend the Golden Flashes head to Annapolis for the Navy Classic. Kent State will compete against wrestlers from: Air Force, American, Brown, Bucknell, Campbell, The Citadel, Cleveland State, Edinboro, George Mason, Lock Haven, Michigan State, Navy, Ohio, Old Dominion, Oregon State, Rutgers and Virginia Tech.
