KENT, Ohio- Sparked by a double-double performance from Danny Pippen, the Kent State University men's basketball team (7-1) recorded a commanding victory at the M.A.C. Center on Tuesday night. The Flashes defeated Detroit Mercy 92-57 for their fifth win at home.
Pippen recorded his second double-double of the season with a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. He also tied his own school-record with seven blocks in a single game.
Four other Flashes scored in double-digits with Philip Whittington and Antonio Williams each with 17 points, Troy Simons (16 pts), and Anthony Roberts coming off the bench with 13 points.
Kent State led for the majority of the contest, using a balanced scoring attack to keep the Titans at bay. In addition, Kent State dominated in the paint with 48 points and scored 24 points off the 16 turnovers committed by the Titans.
For the second consecutive game, Kent State used a decisive second-half run to break the game wide open. After leading by just one point late in the first half, Kent State quickly sprinted away with a 26-5 run in the second half that put the Flashes ahead, 62-37 with 12 minutes left to play, and they never looked back. The run was highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Simons and a reverse dunk by Williams.
In the second half, Kent State went 64.5 percent (20-of-31) from the field and shot 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Flashes' defense held the Titans to just 8-of-39 (20.5 percent) from the floor and only 1-of-9 (9.1 percent) from three-point range in the second half.
Kent State looks to build off its win on Saturday, Dec. 7 as the Flashes close out their homestand with Cleveland State. Tip time between the Flashes and Vikings is set for 7 p.m.
