Bast Wins on Senior Night

KENT, Ohio – Kent State's Isaac Bast had his hand raised one final time at the M.A.C. Center on his Senior Night, but Binghamton came out ahead 22-15. Three matches came down-to-the-wire Saturday night and all three went in favor of the Bearcats.

Bast set the tone early with a takedown at the edge and cruised to a 14-6 major decision over Matt Swanson. A third period reversal and takedown along with riding time clinched the bonus point for the Flashes.

"To do this for five years is a hard thing to do," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "I'm just glad he was able to stay healthy and have a productive year for us. He always works hard and prepares the right way. Hopefully some of our younger guys can follow his lead in their careers."

Also earning a major decision was Kody Komara with a 10-2 victory over Kevin Kelly in the opening match. Komara notched his final takedown with 28 seconds left and was able ride out Kelly for the eight-point win.

Four straight wins from Binghamton put the Flashes in a 19-8 hole, but Jake Ferri (125) swung the momentum with a 5-2 decision over Audey Ashkar. Ferri converted a double leg in the opening 30 seconds and scored on another double to beat the buzzer in the first.

"Jake can be hesitant and picks his moments," Andrassy said. "But he scored on his attacks and didn't make any big mistakes."

Junior Tim Rooney (133) made it two straight wins with a 17-6 major decision against Zack Trampe. Rooney hit six-point moves in the first and second periods, coming within an inch of pinning Trampe.

Sophomores Cory Simpson (141), Richard Jackson (157) and Lane Hinkle (197) all found themselves in tie matches early in the third period, before opportunities slipped away.

The Golden Flashes will get their longest break from competition since early December in preparation for the Mid-American Conference Championships March 8-9 at Old Dominion.
