Softball Weekend Closes with Setback to North Texas

WACO, Tx. – The Kent State softball team (6-4) dropped its final game of the Baylor Invitational to North Texas, 9-0.

The Mean Green (10-4) took the Baylor Invitational championship by outhitting Kent State, 10-2.

Sophomores Maria Cegledy and Kaitlyn Miller each were named to the Baylor Invitational All-Tournament Team.

"We have to work on getting better starts to games," said Kent State head coach Eric Oakley. "Overall we had a good weekend against good competition. We will continue to look to building with our team next week."

How It Happened

UNT started the game with a bang and dropped a four spot in the first inning. North Texas recorded four hits in the inning highlighted by a two RBI double up the middle. They scored two more runs in both the second and the fourth. North Texas put a runner on for Jenna Goodrich who clubbed a homer to left. Rhylie Makawe recorded a two RBI single in the fourth to put UNT up, 8-0.

Senior Bailey Brownfield had the only extra base of the day for Kent State, poking her fifth double of the year down the right field line in the fourth. Sophomore Kennadie Goth recorded the only other hit for KSU.

North Texas added another run in the top of the fifth.

Junior Madi Huck (0-4) got the start and worked 3.1 innings and allowed nine hits and eight runs. Freshman Anilese Kelly entered out of the bullpen and worked the final 1.2 frames and allowed one hit, one run and struck out one. North Texas' Hope Trautwein (6-1) pitched a shutout and had allowed three walks with one strikeout.

The Mean Green won the Baylor Invitational Championship and in the process knocked off #10 Louisiana, 5-1. North Texas also beat #20 Texas A&M earlier this year, 10-2.
