Flashes Open MAC Play with Series Win Over Rockets

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Kent State softball team (9-16) opened its Mid-American Conference schedule grabbing a weekend series win against Toledo (9-17). The Golden Flashes picked up a win Friday afternoon before claiming the series 8-6 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Game 1: Kent State 8, Toledo 6

The Kent State offense got going early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Carlee Selle and Maria Cegledy each first-inning doubles that plated a pair of runs each for the Flashes.

Bailey Brownfield and Brenna Brownfield each launched a home run for Kent State. In total for the Flashes, six players tallied multiple hits, while three players recorded multiple RBIs.

Madi Huck (1-7) secured her first win of the 2019 season, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Andrea Scali came in relief to slam the door on the Rockets and earn the save.

Game 2: Kent State 2, Toledo 5

Maggie McGurk (3-2) held the Kent State bats in check in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The sophomore pitched a complete game for the Rockets, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

Katie Cozy led the Rockets in game two, going 3-for-3 including all five of Toledo's RBIs. She finished the day 4-for-6 with seven runs batted in.

Carlee Selle and Jen Cader recorded the only two RBIs for the Flashes, as Kent State could muster only eight hits in the game.

Andrea Scali (7-7) went 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out eight.

Kent State embarks on a midweek road swing to the Northeast Corridor next week beginning with a doubleheader against last season's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Monmouth on Tuesday, March 26 beginning at 2 p.m. The Flashes will also play a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 27 at Lehigh beginning at 2:30 p.m.
