Flashes Down Broncos in Series Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kent State (14-18, 4-2 MAC) came back facing a deficit in the sixth inning and scored five runs in the frame in its 5-2 victory over Western Michigan (10-15, 2-2 MAC) on Friday evening. Pitcher Andrea Scali was dominant and tied her career-high with 12 strikeouts.
"Great team win with contributions from everyone, said Kent State head coach Eric Oakley. "We talked earlier in the year about disciplined role playing and that's what we did. Pitching and defense have kept us in games until our offense has a chance a break through."
How it Happened
The Broncos scored first on a hit by pitch and two infield singles in the first. The Golden Flashes offense struggled mightily through two turns through the lineup and only mustered three baserunners.
The floodgates opened for the Kent State offense in the sixth inning with one out singles by Kennadie Goth and Bailey Brownfield. Brenna Brownfield came to the plate and missed a home run by inches and drove a double off the top of the left field fence. Carlee Selle reached on a fielder's choice and kept the inning going for Alexis Taube to rip a knock through the left side to score pinch runner Sydney Anderson from second. A wild pitch setup Maria Cegledy's two RBI single that she snuck tight down the third base line. The Golden Flashes sent 10 batters to the plate.
Scali really settled down in the middle innings and retired 18 consecutive Broncos from the last out of the first inning through the second out of the seventh. The Parma, Ohio native is now 10-6 inside the circle and allowed two earned runs with 12 strikeouts and did not allow any free bases.
Reily Galloway (3-6) went six innings and allowed seven hits, five earned runs and struck out two. Jordan Kurth pitched one inning of relief.
