CLEVELAND- Kent State's Tim Rooney (Columbus, Ohio) and Isaac Bast (Massillon, Ohio) were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Wrestling Team on Monday by the conference office. Rooney and Bast both earned the honor for the third consecutive season.
Bast, a fifth-year senior, recently closed out his career with 95 victories. An earth science major, he carries a 3.38 cumulative grade point average. Bast placed in three tournaments this season, including a 165-pound title at the Clarion Open.
Rooney, a redshirt junior, saved one of his best performances for the 2019 MAC Championships, placing third and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. An exercise science major, he carries a 3.83 GPA. Rooney finished second on the team with 24 victories this season and won a 133-pound title at the Cougar Clash.
"Isaac has been a leader in the practice room and the classroom," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "And now it's a changing of the guard with Tim as he has proven his ability in both areas as well. We hope to get more guys back in this (Academic All-MAC) group next year as they get more comfortable in their new roles."
The Golden Flashes and Buffalo were the only two programs with a pair of three-time Academic All-MAC honorees in this year's group.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for a particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
A select group of MAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes will be chosen from the Academic All-MAC Team and announced at later date.
