CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kent State redshirt sophomore Ben Carew has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon, marking the fourth consecutive week a Kent State student-athlete has been honored.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletics representatives.
Carew, a business management major with a 3.785 cumulative GPA, has been an offensive juggernaut at the top of the Kent State lineup this season and led the Flashes to its fourth MAC series victory in a row last week. He hit at a .471 clip with a .941 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage through four games, knocking eight hits with two home runs and two doubles. After the weekend, Carew ranked second in the MAC in batting average (.396) and hits (65), fifth in on-base percentage (.463) and third in both runs scored (42) and stolen bases (19).
Including Kent State's 9-6 victory over Dayton Tuesday night, Carew is on an eight-game hitting streak dating back to April 19 and has reached base in each of the last 23 games. Carew leads the Kent State offense and ranks 23rd nationally with a .395 batting average while also ranking 24th in Division I in hits per game (1.57), 28th in hits (66) and 38th in stolen bases (20).
Kent State will continue MAC play, hosting Toledo for its final weekend series at Schoonover Stadium Friday through Sunday, May 3-5.
