
Lawson Leads Decathlon at MAC Outdoor Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. – Kent State's TJ Lawson holds a 445-point lead halfway through the decathlon competition at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The two-time defending champion won four of Thursday's five decathlon events.
The Golden Flashes scored in both event finals of the day and are tied for fifth with eight points.
"Overall, it was a pretty good first day for our men," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Bill Lawson. "TJ Lawson had a fantastic day, scoring over 4,100 points. Bradley Heck had a two-meter PR in javelin to get fourth-place. Devin Snowden, who is not a javelin thrower by trade, was able to get eighth and score a big point for us in addition to a good first day in the decathlon. And then Brandon Avers ran a strong race in the 10K to finish the day."
TJ Lawson totaled 4,141 points on the opening day of competition. He started the day with his highest-scoring event by clocking a 10.84 in the 100-meter dash to earned 897 points. Lawson added first-place finishes in the long jump, shot put and 400-meter run while scoring more than 800 points in three events.
Devin Snowden and Jacob Mally are also competing in the decathlon. Snowden ended the day in fourth with 3,599 points and is just 97 out of second-place. He took third in the 100-meter dash (11.19) and long jump (22'-1.25") with the 100-meter dash being his highest-scoring event (819). Mally sits in ninth with 2,749 points. His best event was also the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.36 for 782 points.
The Flashes totaled six points in the javelin throw. Bradley Heck took fourth with a personal-best of 196'-3" on his final attempt. Snowden's busy day included an eighth-place finish with a top throw of 161'-1".
Brandon Avers took seventh in the 10K with a time of 32:38.51.
The hammer throw will get Friday's action started at 10 a.m. with the decathlon (110m. hurdles) continuing at 11 a.m. The remaining running prelims are slated for a 4:45 p.m. start.
